Route Description

White Carniola statistical region has many hidden gems in its area. It is therefore great if you are acquainted with some of the local people, because they know better than anyone how to get around the place they live. They can show you trip locations that are not known among tourists.

The village of Krašnji vrh is the perfect example of this. It is a small village located on the border with Croatia. The sunny slope is ideal for vineyards. The Holy Trinity Church stands at the upper end of the village and a hill with a lookout tower towers over it. You can access Krašnji vrh from the town of Metlika that is 10 kilometers (6.3 miles) away, or from the neighboring village of Radovnica.

You can take the forest path or a narrow asphalt road from the village of Radovnica to the Krašnji vrh Hut. The Alpine Club Metlika has erected a 17-meter (55-feet) high lookout tower at the top, a natural climbing wall and a children’s playground near the hut.

The village has a beautiful view. When the weather is nice, you can see the whole Bela Krajina, part of Croatia, Klek Mountain and the Velebit peaks.

The deepest abyss in Bela Krajina, called Pečenevka, is a pleasant pit stop on this hike. About 15 minutes before your finish line, look for a sign that points you into the direction of the landmark.

Interesting Facts

The Bela Krajina Museum is housed in the Metlika Castle, which was first mentioned in 1456, but is probably much older. Together with the city, it played a key role in the defense of Carniola against bloody Turkish invasions, especially in the 15th and 16th centuries. The castle, which survived World War II without much damage, did not have such luck in the older past. Even the museum surroundings are very interesting and you can see a permanent firefighter’s exhibition housed behind a see through glass door. The mission of the Bela krajina Museum in Metlika is to take care of the region’s cultural heritage and to acquaint visitors with their centuries-old customs.

Gostilna in hotel Bela Krajina (Bela krajina Restaurant and Hotel)

The hotel with the restaurant has been operating continuously since 1963 and has been embodying traditional Bela krajina hospitality for over 50 years. The guests can choose from a varied selection of homemade specialties and traditional dishes prepared by in-house chefs. We were blown away by the friendly service and delicious food.

Even though we do not go to school yet, this is a great idea to entertain the parents. The Bistra Buča School (it roughly translates to “Smart Cookie School”) was opened in 2014 and now you can attend classes as they were 60 years ago. In a humorous, fun and at the same time instructive way you will get to know Bela krajina, its history, culture, Bela krajina costume, musical instruments, culinary characteristics… You better listen to a strict and fair teacher who still uses a stick and corn grains for punishment. At the end of the school lesson, “students” receive a Certificate with their names and surnames as proof that they have mastered the basic knowledge of Bela krajina. This is a very original way to preserve the heritage of Bela Krajina.
