Route Description
The municipality of Novo mesto covers an area with a rich history and tradition. People inhabited the area of Lower Carniola (Dolenjska) two thousand years ago, and the settlement on the Krka River bend has officially existed since 1365. Novo mesto is a true regional urban center of southeastern Slovenia and home to over 140,000 inhabitants. The Municipality of Novo mesto is the sixth among eleven municipalities in Slovenia in terms of population. The capital of the Southeast Slovenia statistical region (Jugovzhodna Slovenija) is home to around 36,500 people, most of whom also work here. It is recognisable by its exceptionally successful pharmaceutical, automotive, construction, textile and other industries, as the municipality is home to large companies such as Krka, Revoz, Adria Mobil and TPV. That is why Novo mesto is called “the export capital of Slovenia''.
Novo mesto is the administrative, economic, ecclesiastical, cultural, educational, medical and sports centre of the Southeast Region of Slovenia. It is a hub of plentiful activities, which goes far beyond the regional framework (Source: novomesto.si website). The extremely active social sphere undoubtedly gives an invaluable stamp to Novo mesto's success story, as it enriches everyday life and raises the quality of life in the municipality within the programs and projects of many non-governmental organizations.
Take a circular trip around Novo mesto and get to know this beautiful city together with your children. Leave your car at the Tuš Supermarket parking lot. Go across the bridge and turn left at the pastry shop. Walk on the Krka River Bank along the Zupančič Promenade and when you reach the first crossroads, turn right (go towards the open-air library). Walk to the main road, where you cross the railroad, and at the bus stop, cross the road into Kette Avenue. When you come down the hill, you can see Kette’s House and a memorial plaque. Cross the main road, continue past the shopping center, past the post office, turn sharply right and you will find yourself back at the starting point.
Interesting Facts
Do you know who Dragotin Kette was?
Kette was born (19 January 1876) in the small village of Prem near the Carniolan town of Ilirska Bistrica, in what was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (now in Slovenia). His father was a teacher and a choirmaster; his mother died when he was four years old. In 1898, he enrolled in the State Secondary School in Ljubljana. In 1894, his maternal uncle, Janez Valenčič, who was paying for Kette's scholarship, withdrew his financial support because Kette published some satirical verses about the bishop of Ljubljana Jakob Missia in the student paper. Kette had to continue his studies in Novo Mesto, where he passed his high-school leaving exam in 1898. In Novo Mesto, he fell in love with the daughter of the district judge, Angela Smola, to whom he dedicated many of his poems.
During his high school years, he became acquainted with the young writers Ivan Cankar, Oton Župančič, and Josip Murn, who were introducing modernist elements into Slovene literature.
In the autumn of 1896, at the initiative of Ivan Resman, Kette went to the city of Novo mesto and passed the entrance exam for the seventh grade of the grammar school. He founded a Slovene society, which soon disintegrated due to fear of the school authorities. He died In Ljubljana in 1899 at the age of 23.
