Route Description
On the scenic grassy ridge that rises between the villages of Kropa and Podblica stands the St. Primus and Felician Church in the village of Jamnik. You have certainly noticed the little church in the distance when driving, which attracts views and invites hikers to visit. The trip is a great idea for all families with small children. The church has a beautiful view of the Gorenjska Plain, the Karawanks, the Kamnik and Savinja Alps and a part of the Škofja Loka Hills.
The beautiful nature here takes your breath away and the location is perfect for bringing your toddlers who can walk the trail to the church all by themselves. Despite its relatively modest height of 831 meters (2726 feet), Jamnik is a real beauty among the Slovenian peaks. The locals call it "The Balcony of Gorenjska". This extraordinary viewpoint over Gorenjska can be reached by road from Kropa (4 km/2.85 miles) or from Kranj through Besnica (20 km/12.7 miles).
A beautiful walking path goes from the village of Jamnik to the St. Primus and Felician Church. You can leave your car at the beginning of the promenade, next to the information board (there is only room for two cars) and then continue on foot to the church.
The Jamnik church is illuminated at night and can be seen from many places in Gorenjska. Due to the good strategic and scenic location of the slopes, signal bonfires were lit in these places during the Turkish invasions, warning the locals of the impending danger. In the middle of the village, there is also a closed chapel, which has wooden statues of the Saints Felician and Primus on the altar. In the second half of the 19th century, it was painted on both outside and inside with frescoes depicting several saints. Next to the church, there is also a board with the names of all the surrounding mountain peaks.
Interesting Facts
In Kropa, which is located below Jamnik and is also called the blacksmith's town, you can visit the blacksmith museum and the ‘FOVŠARITNICA’ House.
WHY 'FOVŠARITNICA'?
The multi-level house next to Kropa's central square got its name from 'fovšija' (envy). In the old days, as was the case in the majority of ironworkers houses, multiple families lived in the house. According to local tales, there were once 72 people living in the Fovšaritnica house at the same time. In Kropa's rented accommodation, kitchens were substituted by a group hallway where there were several fireplaces. Since all the housewives cooked there, they could easily see what others had in their pots and the contents were probably often the subject of 'fovšija' – envy.

Visit the Iron Forging Festival in Kropa, which takes place every year during the first weekend of July. On the eve of St Gregory's Day, the iron-foundry pool in the village of Kropa and the Lipnica Stream in the village of Kamna Gorica are illuminated with candles affixed to the floating art creations of local children. One of the best preserved houses in Kropa – the ‘FOVŠARITNICA’ - can also be visited by prior arrangement.
