Route Description

The Kamen Castle is a famous site in the village of Begunje. It is mentioned in Valvasor’s book the Glory of the Duchy of Carniola. Here, families can immerse themselves into the old times of knights and princesses.

Here is a glimpse into the past. The Counts of Ortenburg built the castle in the 12th century and apparently four knights named Ulrich, Markvard, Rudiger and Majnhard Ploz lived there at the time. Later it was owned by the Counts of Celje and from 1436 the Counts of Lambergh.

In 1428 one of the last counts of Celje, Herman III lost his life when he fell from a horse right at this historical building. The counts abandoned the castle in the 18th century when they moved to the more comfortable Katzenstein Mansion in the centre of the village. Several information boards explain the individual important parts of the castle.

A trip to Kamen Castle can be completely adapted to your time frame and to your children’s age and stamina. You can make a short stop by car, have a quick tour, and walk through the ruins. If you are interested in all the details of the castle and its history, you can go on a longer Lambergh Trail, which usually lasts from two to three hours. The path takes you to the Roblek Hill, another well-known place featured in a Slavko Avsenik song.

Interesting Facts

Visit the nearby Avsenik Museum and the Saint Peter Hill. You can extend the trip by visiting the museum or climbing to a beautiful vantage point. Saint Peter has a terrain that is easy enough for younger children. Read more under the trip titled Saint Peter Hill above the village of Begunje.

The renovated Avsenik Museum presents a collection of the Vilko and Slavko Avsenik’s active music-making period. Music and videos on touch screens take you back to the golden age of Avsenik. A new feature in the museum are the interactive points where you can spin a track and watch a video recording from various periods of the Avsenik Brothers Ensemble. On the upper floor, there is an exhibition of the Avsenik family history and an apartment with furnishings from the Avsenik homestead. The museum is housed in the brothers' birth house. Exhibits include original instruments belonging to the musicians and clothing that Slavko Avsenik wore on concert stages and on the front covers of albums. There are also numerous recognitions and awards that the Avsenik Brothers Ensemble have received for their services in the field of music and the promotion of Slovenia, as well as gold, platinum and diamond discs for the number of records sold.
