Route Description
The town of Škofja Loka enchants every visitor with its medieval setting. Near its center stands the popular Križna Gora Hill, which can be a nice family trip, if you are willing to put in a little effort for a beautiful view. You reach the destination in no time. A little tip for you: The Pri Boštjanu Inn (where you park your car) serves fresh homemade donuts and traditional homemade dishes.
But first, do the 20-minute hike! You can adjust the starting point of the trip to the age and stamina of your kids. For example, if you have a baby stroller, you can park at the Pri Boštjanu Inn and walk only to the church and back. You will find this route on our GPX map. This trail is suitable for toddlers from 1.5 years onwards and dandy horses as well.
If you have a baby carrier, and/or children are 4 years old or more, you can choose a slightly longer route. Park your car at the foot of the Križna Gora Hill and head towards the top. You will need about a good hour and a half in one direction on the forest path or on the asphalt road. At the top, turn left towards the St. Cross Church.
The St. Cross Church stands on the Križna Gora Hill, which is located northwest of the town of Škofja Loka. It has a beautiful view of the Škofja Loka hills and a part of the Kamnik Alps. The St. Cross Church (until 1867 it was called the St. Ulrich Church) is a popular excursion point. The modest single-nave late gothic building from the end of the 15th century hides exceptional frescoes from 1502 in the presbytery, which belong to the pinnacle of late Gothic realism in Slovenia. There is also a hunting lodge near the church.
In summer, the meadows are full of colorful flowers (we were enchanted by daisies and bellflowers), and in winter, the snow turns this place into a winter wonderland. We like to come here in all seasons because the place is packed with positive energy.
Interesting Facts
Škofja Loka is the town of the Škofja Loka Passion Play, Slovenia’s oldest preserved dramatic text. Every 6 years the town puts on this interesting performance, in which hundreds of locals perform and participate!

Vita, Olja and Juna Recommend
At the end of the town just below the castle, is a beautiful children's playground called Zamorček (“The Little Black Boy”, from the town’s coat of arms), which is made solely from natural materials. Our family stayed here for quite some time. Parents can sit nearby in nicely arranged seats on the castle hill and drink a well-deserved coffee in peace.
DID YOU KNOW?
The Škofja Loka coat of arms is very interesting because it features the image of a certain black man. According to the legend, one of the Freising proprietors, Abraham, was taken to the Poljanska Valley, and was attacked by a bear.
