Route Description

On one of our days off work, we hiked up the Ojstrica Hill, which has a beautiful view of the lake and its surroundings. Ojstrica and mala Osojnica are hills that rise above the western shore of Lake Bled. Hike to the top and marvel at the beautiful view of the Bled Lake, the island, the castle and the Karawanks in the background. The altitude difference is approximately 190 m (623 feet) and the ascent is easy enough for younger children. We left the car in the Zaka parking lot (you can also leave it just below the Ojstrica Hill, however, there are only two parking spaces) and walked up the initially steep trail, which starts sloping after only 50 meters (54 yards). The ascent time depends on the walking speed, but we reached the top together with our 3-year-old daughter in an hour. An adult hiker needs about 20 minutes for this distance.

At the hilltop, there is peace, a bench and a beautiful view.

Interesting Facts

Once a year, on Christmas Day, the famous Bled legend of the sunken bell comes to life.

With the help of the Bled Society for Underwater Activities, the sunken bell rises again from the depths of the lake. Franciscus Patavinus from Padua, Italy, cast the so-called “wish bell” in 1534. Once upon a time, there lived a young widow in the castle of Bled. Her husband was killed by robbers and his body was thrown into the lake. She was so inconsolable that she gathered all her gold and silver and cast a bell for the chapel on the island, in memory of her husband. But the bell didn’t arrive there. The bell, the boat and boatmen sank during a terrible storm. The desperate widow sold all her property after this accident. She offered the proceeds for the construction of a new church on the island. She left Bled and lived the rest of her life in Rome as a nun. After her death, the Pope had heard of her misfortune and of her good deeds during her life as a nun, so in memory of her he decided to make a new bell. He said that anyone that rings the bell three times and believes in God, his or her wish would come true. Even today on a dark night you can hear the sunken bell ringing from the depths of the lake.
