Route Description

The Pokljuška soteska Gorge is one of our most beautiful discoveries from last year. Compared to the town of Bled, it is more peaceful and less crowded.

It is located in the Triglav National Park and is a fantastic example of a fossil subglacial gorge. The locals also call it the Ribščica Gorge. Ribščica is a stream that drained water from the Pokljuka Glacier during the last ice age and carved limestone rocks up to 50 m (164 feet) deep.

The central part of the gorge hides quite a few fossil remains. The trail is almost 2 kilometers (1.42 miles) long, and the most fascinating sights are the POKLJUŠKA LUKNJA (the Pokljuka Hole) and the GALLERIES OF PRINCE ANDREW.

Drive in the direction of Pokljuka, towards the villages of Zgornja Radovna or Mojstrana. Continue through the village of Krnica, follow the macadam road and leave your car in the marked parking lot. Head on foot uphill by the dry torrent-bed and soon you will find yourself surrounded by steep walls. At the first junction you can peek left into the ‘hidden valley’, where during periods of heavy rain you might be surprised to see a hidden waterfall. Proceeding straight up the main path, you will reach a marked crossroad, which hides two interesting sights in two different directions. Be sure to take enough time to see both of them :).

In the right direction: Walk into the fascinating Pokljuka Hole (a big cave with hollow ceiling), through which you will return if you have decided to take the circular path. It is said that Primož Trubar, a 16th-century Slovene Protestant Reformer, hid here during his escape to Germany.

In the left direction: Walk past the high natural bridge and you will come to the section that would otherwise be impassable, but was arranged as a tourist path with a gallery of wooden bridges (‘The Galleries of Prince Andrew’) back in 1930.

Interesting Facts

Children love playing hide-and-seek and there are many opportunities for this game in the Pokljuška luknja. Who would have thought that Primož Trubar, a 16th-century Slovene Protestant Reformer, hid here during his escape to Germany.

Gostilna Gala Inn

Our family frequently stops at this inn because it is close to several sights and has easy access from the highway. On sunny days, it can be quite packed; however, waiting should not be a problem since there is a big outdoor playground for kids.

Vita, Olja and Juna Recommend

For all enthusiastic fans of winter sports, we should announce that near Bled you will find an excellent family ski resort, where your children will be able to learn and practice the first ski turns. Excellently prepared ski and cross-country trails and a toboggan run will delight all family members (even the youngest ones).
