Route Description

Turn off the Ljubljana - Jesenice motorway at the Kranj - vzhod exit, and then continue driving in the direction of Jezersko. Go through the village of Preddvor towards the village of Bašelj, where you turn right in the direction of the village of Mače. You can leave the car at the beginning of the macadam road and then go to Mače on foot. At the road sign that says “Bašelj”, turn left uphill towards the weekend houses. The road follows a fence. Keep to the right and turn along the forest meadow straight uphill towards the St. Nicholas Church (cerkev Sv. Miklavža). When you enter the forest, the path widens. Continue for only a few 10 steps, and then turn right on a well-trodden path.

A little further on you reach a cart track; cross it and climb a moderately steep trail, which takes you to a larger meadow lying at the foot of the St. Nicholas Church. Climb just for a little bit and voila, you are taken away by a beautiful view of the Upper Carniola statistical region (Gorenjska) settlements, the Polhov Gradec and Škofja Loka hills and, with good visibility, the Triglav Mountain as well.

Interesting Facts

When you are at the St. Nicholas Church, look right up towards the St. Jacob Hill and you will notice an interesting patch of forest, which hides a certain folk tale under its treetops. Scroll down to the Vita, Olja and Juna section and find out more about this!

THE LEGEND OF THE DEVIL'S FOREST Once upon a time, there lived two farmer brothers down in the valley who were having an angry dispute over the ownership of a nearby forest. They quarreled and sued each other in court. The older brother got very angry one day and said, "If the forest can’t be mine, let the devil take it." That night a storm raged with lightning and thunder.
