Route Description

Tamar is a popular excursion point and one of the most beautiful alpine valleys. The easiest access is to park in the Planica Nordic Center (2 EUR for the whole day) and spend about an hour walking to the finish line. You can choose between two different routes. One is a landscaped forest path, and the other one is accessible by car as well. I recommend that you choose the forest path that is parallel to the main road, but if you are going to the Tamar Valley with a baby stroller, stick to the car road. You are greeted by the Virgin Mary Chapel, which stands near the mountain lodge, where they serve truly delicious meals.

Here you can rest, have a change of clothes or sunbathe if the weather is nice. We also recommend a visit to the source of the Sava Dolinka River at the Nadiža Waterfall in the immediate vicinity. When you return to the parking lot, it is worth seeing the Planica Nordic Center and its ski jumps as well as an interesting ski-jumping cross-country center. The trail is suitable for walking all year round; even when covered with snow it is usually well maintained. During hot summers, the Tamar Valley is an ideal place to cool off a bit, as the temperatures here are at least a degree or two lower than in the town of Kranjska Gora.

Interesting Facts

Visit the Planica Nordic Center, where you can admire the ski jumps or go down the zipline in the summer. Maybe you can even catch some of our ski jumper training for their upcoming season.

This location is the right choice for a weekend getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. Enjoy the mountain peace and fresh air. They serve you real alpine stews and we recommend the buckwheat “žlikrofi” dish with pears. Yummy!

In winter, take a sled with you and enjoy the snowy slopes on your way back to Planica. In summer, the path goes under the pleasant shade of the trees all the time, so you will not be (too) hot during your hike.

READ THE INTERESTING FOLK TALE ABOUT THE “AJDOVSKA DEKLICA”/ THE PAGAN GIRL...

Once upon a time, a kindhearted giantess lived amid the rocky cliffs below the mountain Prisank. She helped porters on their way over the mountain pass of Vršič. If she saw they had lost their way in snow or fog, she left her shelter below the overhanging cliffs and hurried to the serpentine road over Vršič to help them. She cleared a path through the snowdrifts for the porters and showed them the right way to go.

On their way back home, the porters used to leave bread and wine for the Ajdovska deklica at the foot of Prisank, so she was never hungry or thirsty.

The maiden was also a fairy godmother. She visited young mothers and predicted the fate of their newborn babies.

One night, she called on a young shepherdess in the Trenta Valley. The mother, who had just given birth to a boy, was asleep in the warm cottage. Ajdovska deklica approached the cradle, bent over the child and prophesied: “when you grow into a man, you will become a brave hunter, such has never before roamed beneath Prisank. One day you will shoot Zlatorog, the white chamois with golden horns.”

When Ajdovska deklica’s sisters learned of this prophecy, they laid a curse on her and turned her into stone as she reached Prisank. There she has remained to this day. Her stony eyes are still staring from Mt Prisank down to the Trenta Valley.
