Route Description
The Češnjevek Ponds are located at the end of the village of Češnjevek, not far from the village of Cerklje. They are only a 20-minute walk away from the Strmol Castle on a forest path. Park your car in front of the entrance and check out this landmark if you have time. The access to the forest path is in the picture below. When you find it, turn right. There are two larger ponds in Češnjevek, and a few smaller ones. We rested here on one of the many benches, listened to a choir of frogs and then returned for a cake and coffee in the restaurant next to the Strmol Castle.
There is a nicely arranged children's playground and a changing table in the inn for the babies.
Interesting Facts
The Strmol Castle is situated on the slopes of Dvorjanski hrib ("Mansion Hill") near the village of Cerklje na Gorenjskem in central Slovenia. In the 13th century, the Strmol Knights settled here and the fortress was named after them. Throughout the turbulent centuries, Strmol Castle retained its original form, making it one of the oldest and best preserved castles in Slovenia.
Strmol Castle is one of the only two Slovenian castles with its original equipment still intact. The last private possessor of Strmol Castle, Rado Hribar, was an industrialist, cosmopolitan, art lover and one of the richest men of his time in our country. He and his wife Ksenija gave the mansion its present appearance. Here they created a place for social gatherings of eminent Slovenian and European nobles of that time. With their sophisticated, cosmopolitan taste, they decorated the castle over the years with a rich collection of artworks and objects of exceptional value, which are still on display today. One of the most interesting things to look at is a crocodile, a pet of Mrs. Ksenija, who bit the owner while bathing and ended up being stuffed on the salon display case. Now he greets visitors to the castle at the entrance.
Near the Češnjevek Ponds, there is also an old brickyard.
