Route Description
The easiest way to get to the little mills is to start from the village of Suhadole. Drive from the town of Mengeš in the direction of the Brnik Airport, turn left at the petrol station and continue through the village of Suhadole all the way to the church of St. Clement, where you follow the signposts.
If you are driving from the direction of Brnik, pay attention to a Chinese restaurant, because the road turns right into the village of Suhadole immediately after it. Drive past the church and turn right (see our photo gallery where the path is marked). Unfortunately, we did not find any road signs directing us to the little mills. When the asphalt ends, the macadam road across the bridge over the Pšata River leads you to the foot of a lower hill. Leave the car here and walk for about half an hour to the little mills. If you decide to tackle the trip on your bicycle or with a baby stroller or a dandy horse, the terrain is easy all the way to the destination. The road turns to the right under the hill and becomes narrower after a kilometre and a half (0.16 miles). Only a few hundred meters (109 yards) and you are at your finish line. The passenger planes taking off at the Brnik Airport fly right over your head.
Interesting Facts
Sing with us the Little Mill Song (“Ob bistrem potoku”), a traditional Slovene folk song that is very popular with the kids. It tells of the important role mills used to have (and still have) in the production of flour and consequently the livelihood of people.
It goes like this in English:
Along the clear stream is a mill ring ring,
and I am the miller’s son Bill, ring ring!
When the mill roars and the water bubbles,
my heart rejoices and sings, it sings! (Repeat 2x)
If the mill should ever stop turning,
the miller and farmer would be yearning.
And children would cry and lament loudly,
a life without bread is lousy, lousy! (Repeat 2x)
Water, flow with zeal,
on the large mill wheel.
The grain is crushed when the stone rotates
and the flour falls into the crates, the crates. (Repeat 2x)
Here is the original song in Slovene:
Ob bistrem potoku je mlin cin cin,
a jaz sem pa mlinarjev sin, cin cin!
Ko mlinček ropoče in voda šumlja,
srce mi veselo igra, igra (2x)
Če mlinček pri miru bi stal,
bi mlinar in kmet žaloval.
In otrok bi jokal in tožil glasno,
kako je brez kruha hudo, hudo (2x)
Le teci mi voda lepo,
na veliko mlinsko kolo.
Ko kamen vrti se in žito drobi,
že moka se v skrinjo praši, praši (2x)

Near the town of Komenda stands the Jože Pučnik Airport. Take the Brnik-Kranj road and turn left at the end of the airport by the fence onto the macadam path. Observe the take-offs and landings of planes and see how many of them you can count.
