Route Description

We do not come to this area as often as we would like. When we finally decided to hop over here, we could not decide: should we hike up Calvary Hill, Pyramid Hill or the Mestni vrh Hill?

You can connect the Pyramid Hill and Calvary Hill hike in the same trip with a nature trail that is somewhere around 5 kilometres (3.18 miles) long and will take up to three hours. After consulting with the locals, we decided to tackle Pyramid Hill.

You start the trip right in the city park, which is very nicely landscaped and offers many paths for walking and shade on hot summer days. As soon as we began climbing up the hill we found ourselves among the vineyards. The hill is 386 meters (1,266 feet) high and it takes about 20 minutes to half an hour of walking to get to the top, including the stops you make to take a photo. For toddlers, this is a very pleasant and effortless climb.

Interesting Facts

The Upper Maribor Castle (Mariborski grad) was built in the early 12th century as a defence against the Hungarians. Later on, the settlement, square and town were named Marchpurg or Marburg. It was renovated around 1560 and then demolished by 1790. A stone pyramid was built from the remains of the material, which also gave the hill its name. The only remains of the castle were a trench with a steep embankment and a well without a rim. At the top of the trench stands a classicist chapel from 1821 with a stone statue of Mary.

The top-quality regional specialties they serve are prepared according to a traditional recipe, and are worthy of recommendation. You can refresh yourself and rest in the hut to fill your batteries for the continuation of the journey or your return to the valley. There are many events in the hut during the season, so it is often very lively there.

Half an hour's drive from Maribor lies one of the most beautiful tourist attractions in our country; at least that is what my mother told us ;). It was hard to leave the playground in Maribor, but we also enjoyed the view of the Heart-shaped Road in Špičnik.
