Route Description
Take a walk through the ancient town of Škofja Loka, spend a few moments on the Zamorček Playground (The Little Black Boy Playground, named after the Škofja Loka coat of arms) and climb the Škofja Loka Castle, which has a beautiful view of the surroundings.
This short family trip to Škofja Loka, one of the most beautiful Slovenian cities, usually lasts up to two hours.
The area around Škofja Loka is dotted with many castles and mansions. The first ones were built in the 13th century, others got a completely new look after the great earthquake in 1511, and some were built "only" in the 17th century.
They are built in carefully selected locations that still enchant visitors from near and far. Some of them were transformed into museums, with collections about the history and way of life in Škofja Loka in the past centuries. Visit the Škofja Loka Castle and its interesting castle gardens, where you can get to know past folk customs.
One of the most visited museums in Slovenia is housed in the mighty Škofja Loka Castle. It protects the rich natural and cultural heritage of the Škofja Loka area. It displays the archaeological, historical, cultural-historical, artistic, ethnological, natural history collection, and the Škopar House Outdoor Museum.
The path from the Zamorček Playground to the castle climbs steeply (but only for less than 50 m/164 feet) and there are a few dozen stairs on the way so keep that in mind if you have a baby stroller.
Interesting Facts
Škofja Loka is the town of the Škofja Loka Passion Play, Slovenia’s oldest preserved dramatic text. Every 6 years the town puts on this interesting performance, in which hundreds of locals perform and participate!

Vita, Olja and Juna Recommend
At the end of the town just below the castle, is a beautiful children's playground called Zamorček (The Little Black Boy Playground, named after the town’s coat of arms), which is made solely from natural materials. Our family stayed here for quite some time. Parents can sit nearby in nicely arranged seats on the castle hill and drink a well-deserved coffee in peace.
DID YOU KNOW?
The Škofja Loka coat of arms is very interesting because it features the image of a certain black man. According to the legend, one of the Freising proprietors, Abraham, was taken to the Poljanska Valley, and was attacked by a bear.
