Route Description
We have very good news for the Istra locals and other roadtrippers. The 1837 coastal road (also known as “Riva Lunga”) between the cities of Koper and Izola has been closed to traffic. Cyclists and pedestrians can now walk freely on the road without the danger of motor traffic.
Here is a tip for the parents: if the walking distance is too long for your toddlers, you can take a bus back to Koper, for example. Sometimes the trip also needs to be spontaneously adjusted to any sort of tiredness. In the end we ate too much ice cream, so we unanimously voted to return to the starting point by public transport.
Interesting Facts
The Slovene Riviera is located on the Gulf of Trieste, by the Adriatic Sea. It is part of the Istrian peninsula and is 56.6 kilometres (35.1 miles) long. In Europe, only Bosnia and Herzegovina and Monaco have a shorter coastline. It is bordered with the Italian coast in the north and with the Dragonja River in the south. The coast is surrounded by the gulfs of Koper, Strunjan and Piran, which are part of the Gulf of Trieste.
The coast is usually considered the territorial sea of the Republic of Slovenia, which covers a little more than 300 km² (168 mi2). The coastal road (which is actually the longest part of the Slovenian coastline) between the cities of Koper and Izola has been closed to traffic in 2017.

On every trip to the coast in summer or early autumn.
Make sure to bring a swimsuit and a towel every time you come to the Slovenian coast. The sea is gorgeous and it may tempt you to jump in. You can always just dip your toes in after a long walk.
The trip from Koper to Izola is quite long for smaller children, so we took the bus back to our starting point, where we parked the car.
To make the path to Izola even more interesting for all the little hikers, listen to a fairy tale about an Istrian shepherd and fairies.
