Route Description
Trstelj is the highest lookout hill in the Slovenian Karst. It is also the highest peak of Črni hribi Hills (Black hills), which rise above the plateau of Trieste-Komen between villages of Lipa and Opatje selo and and fall towards the Vipava Valley between the Dornberk Village and Miren Municipality.
The Stjenkova koča Mountain Lodge stands at the top at 610 meters/2,001 feet above sea level. During WWII, an Italian military facility was located here. Nova Gorica Mountain Society renovated the building and opened it on 20 August 1850. The mountain lodge bears the name of a national hero Anton Šibelj-Stjenko, who died during WWII.
To the east, you can see the Trnovo Forest Plateau with high areas of Čavno, Nanos Mountain and the slightly lower peaks of Kačnik and Lipnik, which are separated from Trstelj only by the Železna vrata Pass. From the east to south, the horizon shows the peaks of Snežnik, Vremščica and Slavnik. To the south, you can see the vast plateau of the Trieste-Komen Plateau and the city of Trieste. To the west, you can spot the slopes of Črni hribi Hills and Stol (629 meters/2,063 feet above sea level), the second highest peak of this hill. To the north, the slopes of the Črni hribi Hills fall into the Vipava Valley which is guarded by the low hills stretching towards the town of Nova Gorica and the southern slope of the Trnovo Forest Plateau.
The trail is suitable for hiking with younger children. We drove our youngest in a pram for a while, but we had to leave it behind as soon as the road turned into macadam.

Vita, Olja and Juna Recommend
Spend a few days in the embrace of the Karst region and see how beautiful this part of Slovenia is.
Mother Nature has shaped the Karst over time and gave it many natural sights that the local people still preserve and nurture every day.
The landscape has many grooves, ravines, “stone” mushrooms ... All these larger and smaller shapes of the karst surface are made of limestone. Mother Nature has shaped it with its phenomena such as rain, wind, sun, etc.
The landscape is undulating due to valleys, karst depressions and sinkholes, which give the landscape its diversity and variety. The underground is also varied, which is reflected in many karst caves that were formed by sinking water. The caves are rich in various sigma formations, and they also contain rock forms and sediments (especially cave clay).
We can say that the diversity of the karst landscape is also reflected in the people who have lived here for centuries. They are friendly, warm and hospitable. At the same time, they have amassed their piece of land here through the history of time.
And the plants in the karst landscape have the colors that caress our eyes.
